A publication based on Marcel Duchamp’s 1957 essay The Creative Act, taking certain phrases from the essay and presenting them in a more visually interesting way in order to appeal to creative, visual people. The brief stipulated several restrictions (Helvetica, two colours only, A4 size) and so the aesthetic was developed around these.

I don’t want to spam up everyone’s dashboard with lots of photographs but you can see more over at my portfolio, if you’re interested.

69 Love Charts.
This might become a series that I’ll put together as a zine. Then again, it might not.

So I made the zine. Lots more Magnetic Fields-themed graphs. Once I get a short print run sorted out, I’ll sell a few copies but for now it’s available online for your viewing pleasure/misery (delete as applicable).

I posted a work-in-progress idea a couple of weeks ago but these are the final prints. It’s all gone a bit fluoro since then but I really, really like it.

The brief was to brand a Manchester art gallery called THE SPACE. The poster series promotes an exhibition called ‘Noise’ celebrating the very best of badly executed film photography; grainy, noisy, badly exposed. The cube features throughout the series, referencing not only the abstract ‘space’ of the gallery but also the chamber of a camera obscura.

We had a crit session this morning and as I was putting my prints up on the wall, I noticed that everyone else has taken the brief in a completely different direction. This time last year, I think that would have really scared me. I’d have assumed I’d ‘done it wrong’ or something. This year, I’m happy to be doing things differently, whether it’s a good thing or not. No one wants a cookie-cutter designer.

Oh and in other news, I went and got myself a Cargo (http://cargocollective.com/elliethomas) and I’ll be using that as my official portfolio from now on. But I’m going to keep posting on here though. Tumblr’s been good to me, I won’t abandon her yet.
