What we've learned from Black Swan: Ballerinas are mental and Darren Aronofsky can go a tad too far.

I have no problem with these psychological thrillers with their weird imagery and WTF moments. I am completely prepared to suspend my disbelief as Natalie Portman sprouts feathers and murders her own doppelganger.

But there is a line. And that line is Winona Ryder repeatedly stabbing herself in the face with nail file whilst screaming “I’M NOTHING!” When things get that weird, it’s hard not to find it funny and I don’t think laugh out loud was really what Aronofsky was going for. I probably would have liked it more if it hadn’t tried to take itself so seriously because it is a very well made film. But it is also, in my mother’s words, “jumpy, lesbiany and stabby”.

It also features far more Natalie Portman sex faces that I think anyone ever asked to see.

Hey, xD. So, all in all, you're doing 3 A2s and an extra AS? I'm thinking of doing the same thing next year -- just for the love of learning more than anything (yeah, yeah, I concede: I'm lame) -- because I'm in my AS year at the moment, but I'unno... Is it too much work? Does it distract from your A2s? P.S. Sorry for such an education-based question on tumblr aha...

Haha no problem. Well I’m not sure I can really help you on that - the extra AS I’m doing doesn’t actually have any of its own lessons, it’s like Art History and it’s just two sketchbooks and two essays. Basically about the same amount of work as general studies or something like that.

I guess it just depends what subjects you’re taking really. I’m alright because I’m taking Literature and arts subjects so there’s a lot of coursework and only a couple of exams. If you’re taking subjects that are particularly intensive or exam heavy (history, politics, sciences, maths…) I wouldn’t recommend it. Then again, if you enjoy the subject then the extra work won’t actually feel like work.

Sorry if that was really unhelpful, I just realised I managed two paragraphs of absolute nonsense.

I am loving your series for the Birkenhead Central Library! Where did you find the idea for that concept? PS. Thanks for the follow back!

Thanks! It was a mixture of Saul Bass, Olly Moss and the fact that I just got a new craft knife so I wanted to use cut out lettering. Oh and all the cool things my favourite writers had said.

No problem, thanks for following in the first place!

Thanks for the follow back! I LOVE your book quote designs!!! Graphic design and photography are two of my side hobbies, so I always admire other people's work like yours! And I'm a font snob too :)

Thanks! As for being a font snob, I’ve come to the conclusion that all the best people are (:

Your flickr has pics of your sketchbook and I absolutely adore them. More designers need to keep sketch books, collage books, and everything in-between. I love all the hand-made elements in your work. The fashion posters are superb and I'm rather jealous. Thank you for all the amazing work.

Oh wow thank you. I try to sketchbook as much as I can, mainly because it encourages me to use more handmade elements. If I start a project at my Macbook, I’m likely to end it there too. Thanks for the compliments - I always think of myself as a designer rather than an artist and I’m not always that comfortable with traditional media. It’s good to know it’s working.

Hate Comic Sans as well. Along with Papyrus and Bradley Hand.

Don’t forget Impact, it’s pretty awful too. Then again, I’m probably too much of a type snob.

cheers to you, random stranger friend. i appreciate you posting only you're own stuff, i personally have gotten lazy with this whole blog thing, and seldom post. when i do, chances are it's a re-blog. much less work. i've become lazy. I also really like you're stuff. I've attended two art schools here in the US and i can definitely say it's not awful, and in fact quite good. I hope that amounts to some sort of credit. graphic design isn't my best area, i'm more of a 3D/ Sculptor guy, but i'd like to think my graphic sensibility is at least decent (but definitely not great). but i hope at least my opinion can give you some credit to not being awful. if not, i'm still gonna follow your blog. like a stalker. maybe. only kidding. probably.

Well it’s good to know the thanks is mutual. And you have to follow me because I’m following you now so it’s only polite (:

Hey! I absolutely LOVE your posters! Is there anyway that I can purchase them? -Allison

Thanks! They’re not at the moment but I’ll look into it. In a perfect world I would screenprint my own copies but I haven’t got the facilities for that at the moment. But I may set up a cafepress store - I’ll let you know if I do.

Your blog is brilliant! :)

Why thank you (:

I just wanted to say thanks to all my followers.

I know that probably sounds really insincere and, if it does sound sincere, it probably just sounds stupid. After all, you’re all just random people, most of whom I’ve never met, who just clicked the “follow” button and probably haven’t given it a second thought since.

But I really am thankful. I very rarely reblog and virtually everything I post is my own work. So each reblog, like and new follower means a lot to me. Any recognition that my work isn’t awful, not matter how small, reassures me that I’m not completely wasting my time with all this. So cheers random stranger, you have no idea how encouraging you’re being.
